There is a time of the day that the French describe as being “entre chien et loup”–between dog and wolf. It describes that twilight period when you can no longer tell exactly what you’re seeing. Similar liminal blurring happens in the in-between zones of consciousness, particularly the zones between waking and sleep, attention and trance, baseline and psychedelic. Join Erik Davis and Jennifer Dumpert as they discuss working with these liminal mind states. Hypnagogia—the hallucinogenic, free associative dream state that happens as you drift off to sleep—can be channeled for creativity, problem solving, and consciousness hacking. Meditation clarifies and intensifies attention even as it calms down other features of consciousness, opening up to trance states. The use of subtle allies—mild psychoactive substances like calamus, mugwort, tea or kratom—demand that you consciously tune into the experience in order to build a relationship with the plant. Learning to work on liminal edges of consciousness is like learning to surf, where the water crashes into the land. And like surfing, its fun, playful, embodying, and sometimes spiritually rewarding.
