San Francisco,

The Summer of Love changed more than rock’n’roll, fashion, and visual art. It also blasted open American spirituality. Many of our current mystic obsessions—holistic healing, Buddhist meditation, yoga, shamanism, transformational festivals—owe their most recent roots to the hippie counterculture and especially to its fondness for psychedelic drugs. In this presentation, I will tell the trippy tale of freak religion with a myriad of clips and short films drawn from the extraordinary archive of San Francisco’s own Oddball Films. Weaving together a kaleidoscope of obscure documentaries, home movies, TV news footage, performance recordings, and experimental animations, I’ll shed lysergic light on the many facets of California’s consciousness culture: witches and Warlocks, yogis and Krishnas, Sufis and Satanists, Christian rockers and psychedelic mystics.
